Gutter installation is not a heavily regulated specialty in the way electrical or plumbing work is, which means the quality range among contractors is wide. Knowing what to ask and what to verify before signing anything will protect you from most of the common problems.

Verify the contractor’s California license

In California, contractors performing work valued at $500 or more in combined labor and materials are required to hold a license from the Contractors State License Board. For gutter installation, the relevant license classification is typically C-43 (Sheet Metal) or B (General Building).

You can verify any contractor’s license number, current status, and any disciplinary history at cslb.ca.gov. The search takes about 30 seconds. Do not skip it. Working with someone who cannot pass the cslb.ca.gov lookup creates liability exposure if a worker is injured on your property, and you have limited legal recourse if the work is done poorly.

Also confirm the contractor carries general liability insurance and workers’ compensation coverage. Ask for certificates of insurance before work starts.

Get at least two written quotes

Phone estimates are not quotes. A legitimate quote should be in writing and should specify:

  • Total linear footage of gutter
  • Material type and gauge (for aluminum, this should state 0.027 or 0.032 inch)
  • Gutter profile and width (5-inch K-style, 6-inch K-style, half-round, etc.)
  • Number of downspouts and their size
  • Whether removal of the existing gutter system is included
  • Where downspouts will terminate
  • Payment terms
  • Warranty on labor and materials

If a contractor gives you a lump-sum price with no itemization, you cannot compare it meaningfully to other quotes or verify you are getting what you paid for.

Ask about fascia condition

A contractor who does not look at your fascia before quoting is either guessing or planning to skip the inspection entirely. Fascia condition directly affects whether the installation will hold. Ask each bidder: “Will you inspect the fascia before installation, and what happens if you find rot once the old gutters come down?”

The answer should be that they will inspect, document any damage found, and price repair either as a line item in the original quote or as a clearly communicated additional scope before any repair work is done.

Red flags

Door-to-door solicitation after a storm: Legitimate local contractors do not typically canvas neighborhoods after wind or rain events. Anyone who shows up unsolicited and offers to inspect your roof or gutters for free as part of a sales pitch deserves extra scrutiny. Verify their license before any conversation goes further.

Pressure to sign the same day: A quote that expires in 24 hours or a salesperson who tells you pricing will go up tomorrow is a pressure tactic. Material prices do fluctuate, but a reputable contractor will give you time to compare bids.

Cash-only requirement or request to pay the full amount upfront: Standard practice for a job of this size is a deposit at contract signing (often 10 to 20 percent) with the balance due at completion. Avoid any arrangement that requires full payment before work begins.

Very low bids with vague scope: A quote significantly below all competing bids is worth scrutinizing. It may reflect a thinner gauge of aluminum, fewer hangers than standard, or an expectation that they will find problems during installation and charge for extras.

Questions to ask before hiring

  • How long have you been installing gutters in San Diego County?
  • Who does the work, your own employees or subcontractors?
  • What is your standard hanger spacing?
  • What gauge aluminum do you use, and can I see a material spec?
  • How do you handle fascia repair if it is needed?
  • What does your labor warranty cover and for how long?
